As business friends, let's talk plainly. A business plan is simply your telling your story about your business. Can you talk about your business? Do you tell others about what you do? Then, you have an informal business plan already.

Why is it necessary to write it down? First, you write it down to be accurate and consistent. When you put your plan on paper, you have to really think about what you are doing and why. Sometimes, when we see things in writing, they make more sense ... or no sense at all!
Second, when you write down your plan, you can share it accurately with others. How can your employees help your business be successful if they don't understand your vision and their role in it?
Third, when your plan is in writing, you can honestly evaluate your business' performance. You would be surprised how many business owners don't know if they are making money ... Do you?
Finally, a plan can be tailored to help you sell your business to others. Trying to get a new customer? Your business plan may convince them that you have the ability and the vision to be a part of their business. Or if you need additional money, your plan can convince investors that your company is worth the risk.

Frankly, if it is not worth the time and effort for you to put your business plan on paper, why should anyone else take time to invest in your business - with their time, energies, or money?
